Discover the "Violetta·s" project

This season, the Opéra national de Lorraine breaks the codes of lyrical creation by inviting artists to reinvent La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi.

At the heart of this opera, the character of Violetta combines all the characteristics of the lyrical heroine: sublime, passionate lover and great martyr. However, as a successful courtesan, she also redefines the contours of social conventions. The ambition of the Violetta·s project is to create a piece of musical theater based on a reflection on gender identity. Who would Violetta be if she were not the stereotype of the woman, conceived under a male gaze specific to another era?

To answer this question, the project brought together transgender and non-binary people, for whom reflection on gender identity is fundamental. The troupe will write the play and will perform the theatrical part of the show on February 22 and 23, 2023 at 7pm on the stage of the Salle Poirel in Nancy. The choir of musicology students from the University and the CRR of Nancy (under the direction of Célia Pierre) will join the artists of the Orchestra of the Opéra national de Lorraine and the troupe of actors to interpret Verdi's pages. The Opéra national de Lorraine will be pleased to welcome for the first time director Laëtitia Guédon, playwright Vanasay Khamphommala, and to welcome back William Le Sage as musical director of the project.

The production took off in September with weekly choir rehearsals and writing workshops.
